8 Things to Get for your Homeschool Room Now

As a homeschool teacher, you are probably like me. You want a separate homeschool room and you want it to look like the homeschool rooms you see on Instagram.

Or not!

But regardless, you want your homeschool room or space to encourage learning. I prefer not to have chaos because a chaotic space encourages a chaotic mind, for me. But that could just be me. If you thrive in chaos, then by all means.

Anyway, I digress as per usual.

Here are 5 things to get for your homeschool room or space now. They are NOT in order of most important to least important.

A Suitable Desk for your Homeschool Room

While I understand that homeschool Instagrammers are big on beautiful, solid wood desks, I think that it is important to purchase a suitable desk that works well for your space and your situation. For us, suitability is more important than splendor.

While I could have gone for a family heirloom that was passed down through the ages, the desk that works best for our space is a folding card table. The one we have (which I might have gotten from Costco, I’m not sure now) is sturdy. We’ve had it for about 2 years and have never had any issues.

The reason it works for our space (and lives) is that we need to be able to put away the desk when we use the room for other activities. It is more important to us to get furniture that works best for our family, rather than some ideal that every family desires.

Great Lighting in your Homeschool Room

I don’t know about where you live, but some New York mornings can be really, really gloomy. This is exactly why this sister is not a fan of winter.

But anyway, coupled with the gloominess, we do not have great lighting in our rental. So the next best thing was to get us a great lamp for our homeschool room. A bright lamp or a fun lamp in a beautiful homeschool space wakes everyone up to the task at hand on the day.

A Computer for your Homeschool Room

Of course, if your child is doing online school as homeschool, it’s more than obvious that you’ll need a computer

Even if your child is not doing homeschool classes online, a computer is a necessity. We create spelling printables, search google earth, look up meanings for words, watch YouTube learning videos to bolster topics, and a host more of other things.

For us at least, a computer is an absolute necessity for our homeschool room. We use an iMac; however, any computer would do for homeschool purposes.

Bookshelves for your Homeschool Room

I do not think that we were ready for the outrageous number of books we have collected over the past five years of homeschooling. And trust me when I say that we do not buy books. Well, that is apart from the books that come with our homeschool curriculum.

We use Sonlight Homeschool Curriculum. It is a Literature-based curriculum that comes with read-aloud books. And while we’ve had a great time reading the books, we are amassing huge numbers of books daily.

In any case, I say all this to say that we’ve needed not one, not two, but three bookshelves to store all of our books. And this is not to mention the number of books Jana has amassed in the tent under her bed, or the separate trough to hold our library books, or…….I could go on, but you get the picture.

I wonder if you have as many books as we do. Maybe more?

A Board for your Homeschool Room

When Jana was 4-years-old, I bought a double-sided board at iKea. One side is dry-erase while the other is a blackboard. This easel has lasted for 4 years and is still going strong. And we use it every single school day.

I don’t know about you, but I absolutely need a board to teach. I can’t live without it. We do Math problems, Language Arts explanations, and Spelling all over our dry erase board.

School Supplies

Nobody’s doing school without the essentials. Pencils (lots of them), rulers, erasers, composition notebooks, whiteboard markers, washable markers, crayons, colored pencils. You name it, you need it.

We homeschoolers tend to have this idea that we don’t need to be as well-stocked as the teachers in public schools. Wrong! We probably need more supplies than they do, given that we’re all trying to provide our little kid geniuses with unique experiences.

Here’s a tip: Whenever school supplies go on sale, don’t hesitate.

An Electric Sharpener

An electric sharpener was the thing I didn’t know I needed for my homeschool room until I got it. For years, Jana and I sharpened pencils by hand. My friends spoke about Electric Sharpeners but I paid them no mind.

Well after 3 years, I finally got tired of not being able to find any of our 20-30 sharpeners in our schoolroom. Not only that, but whenever I found one, it would not do its job efficiently. In frustration, I gave in and bought an electric sharpener. We absolutely love it!
